The 16 th and 17 th century mandolinos from northern Italy were small lutes with 5 or 6 courses or pairs of gut strings, The Neapolitan-style mandolin developed 4 pairs of wire strings and was used for chamber music in the the 18 th century. Popular in the early 20 th century, this “bowl-back” mandolin was an important part of domestic music-making and the soprano of the mandolin orchestra.
